About Us

Recognising that the HIV pandemic was presenting a unique challenge to Jewish individuals, and the community, a small group of individuals acting on the Jewish maxims of Pikuach Nefesh, Bikkur Cholim and Kol Yisrael Arevim Zeh-Bazeh established the Jewish AIDS Trust.

Initially the organisation acted to provide essential pastoral and financial support to individuals living with HIV, many of whom were too scared to approach family and friends due to the stigma of the HIV ‘label’. In some cases they had faced discrimination and abandonment in their time of greatest need.

For over 40 years HIV has affected the lives of millions.
The pandemic is not yet over.

According to UNAIDS almost 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV and National AIDS Trust data estimates the UK figure to be over 100,000 people.

The UK data relating to HIV has changed significantly in recent years:

  • Almost 50% of HIV transmission is via sex between men and women

  • Almost 50% of people accessing HIV treatment are aged 50+

From Support to Education & Training...

It quickly became apparent that the Jewish community needed a voice to advocate for more effective education to prevent further infections.

An education programme was written by HIV and Sexual Health experts, together with experienced educators and the important work of raising awareness began.

Delivered primarily by highly-trained volunteers JAT’s workshops and training sessions have reached thousands of young people in Jewish schools, Jewish youth movements and universities.

JAT has also provided training and advice to multiple health settings and agencies to increase awareness of the particular sensitivity required when supporting people from the Jewish community – from providing Kosher food to understanding the Jewish values underpinning our traditions.

Adapting for Future Challenges...

JAT’s reputation for excellence has allowed it to develop strong partnerships with other communal organisations, ensuring the sustainability of high-quality sexual health and relationship education across the Jewish community.

Driven by the value of Tikkun Olam, supporting individuals will continue to be at the heart of the organisation’s work as we strive for zero HIV infections, reduction in sexually transmitted infections and healthy relationships throughout our community.
